Pearls and Lace Thursday #12

It must have been nice to be surrounded with laces and silks every day, parasols and brooches, hats with feathers, teas every afternoon, visits from friends and visits to friends.
The nostalgia from a bygone era still evokes something inside us that relates somehow to those women who lived before us. Today's society of rushing here and there to just get the job done has turned our world into a place where I feel I don't belong.

I'm guessing I just wish the old things had stuck around for us to enjoy more, not just as a novelty, but a daily routine.
I would certainly not want to live without electricity or air-conditioning.
My dishwasher and I are great friends, but still, the beauty of the antiques around us were the daily utensils of those days long ago.

Although the internet and our cell phones have just about wiped out the snail mail and landlines as means of staying in touch with people, sometimes I like the card in the mail or the postcard from a friend.
They're tangible. I can keep them. I can cherish THEM!

And who knows. Maybe some day years and years from now someone will want those cards I kept. Maybe someone will even want this old cell phone as a prized antique???

Feathers in My Tea!

Do you like feathers in your tea? Neither do I.
Ghastly thought. Need I say more?
Actually, I'm showing off my rusty crusty new enamelware table!

Now who on earth painted the base of it YELLOW, I don't know.
But I actually had a doily with yellow and red, so I brought it all together with the Rooster teapot and creamer with sugar, and there you have it!
It will NOT be staying yellow....a nice coat of white paint will be perfect.
Just not now!
Be sure and join in with all of the other Tuesday parties going on this week!!!
Isn't Tuesday a wonderful Blog day???

More Blue Blessings!

I wasn't watching Felix The Cat,
BUT, my heart DID go Pitter Pat!!!

The same garage sale I told you about where my husband found the hand painted china had these 4 cross-stitched napkins, outlined with blue. They were so sweet I couldn't pass them up!
And at the store we found before the garage sale??
This was where I just about lost it.
There, on a shelf up high, as part of a display for all the world to see,
just sitting there waiting for me to eye them, were FIVE
of these lovely delicate handpainted beauties:

I stood there and watched for my husband to come my way so that he could get someone to help me get them down.
The lady got a ladder, and not very carefully started to hand them to me.
"Please Lord, please don't let them break" I prayed!!!

"Oh, aren't they cute" she says. "Yes, I thought so too" I answered. Carefully I cradled them next to my heart all the way to the front.
I paid for them and conquered the urge to holler
"START THE CAR!!!!!"

What a blessing to find!!

I couldn't wait for Pearls and Lace Thursday to share them with you.
(But be sure and come back and join me for this week's Pearls and Lace starting Wednesday evening. I'll have Mr. Linky ready!!!)

Embroidered Basket of Roses

The time, the detail, the patience!!

The Roses piece made by my mother is my favorite. I know that she spent many hours, all very enjoyable to her, working on it.

But what am I going to do with it?? It's just one piece of large material with the embroidery on it. Should I make it the center of a quilt (like I can quilt or something)...or frame it?

I love all the pinks of the embroidery, the postcards, the doily and the phamplet. I thought they all went together well. Maybe I'll just have to leave the piece as part of the vignette!!

However I end up using it, it will be my alltime favorite piece that she made.

Pearls and Lace #11

The Year 1909
Let's make believe:
Little Lorain is sitting in her room, her thumb in her mouth...and her tooth is wiggling around and just WON'T come out!!
She is 6 years old today, and her party will start after her dear father gets home that night.
They will have cake and ice cream, and lots of presents.
She goes to her mother's room and spies the dressing table. A bottle of perfume, a yellow singing bird, and the pearls and amber jewelry that her mother will wear that evening with her new brown felt dress. The weather is chilly, even though the sun is shining, and little Lorain wants to go play outside so she can forget about her tooth.

"No, dear, not today" her mother tells her. "I don't want you to get dirty before your party tonight! Big girls can sit quietly in their room and play for the afternoon."
Poor Lorain. Nothing to do but wait and wiggle her tooth. She wishes something good would happen. Just then the Postman puts the days mail through the slot in the front door. Lorain jumps from her chair and runs for the front door.
There, on the top of the pile is a Postcard with beautiful Pansies on it..
Could it be for her???

She carefully picks up the whole pile and takes it to her mother's room.
"Mother, there's a Postcard on top" she states hopefully.

"Oh look! A card just for you Lorain! Here you are" says mother, and hands her the beautiful Pansy card. Lorain can't read yet, so she looks at the front of the card, and then turns it over.
"Mother, please would you read it to me?"
Her mother reads the words to her:

"Lorain, So you are six years old. Did your tooth fall out? I hope not.
Kiss Brother for me.
Lovingly, Aunt Fan

"How lovely Lorain! A card from your Aunt Fannie. She lives in Oklahoma you know dear. Wasn't that nice of her to send you a birthday Postcard and have it arrive on your birthday!!!"

Lorain is glad that the postcard is from her favorite Aunt. She looks forward to drawing her a picture of her party and thanking her for the beautiful Postcard.
As she looks at her mother's dressing table, the pile of poetry books with the pearls draped over them catches her eyes.
"Mother, may I please try on your pearl necklace?", she asks.
"Yes, dear, for a few minutes, but please be very careful with them" Mother answers.
Lorain carefully lifts the pearls from the books and gently drapes them about her own shoulders and neck.
Just then, her brother enters the room and his dog, Earl, jumps up on Lorain's front and pushes her down hard onto the floor. He then licks her face. Lorain is upset and Mother is too.
Brother takes Earl away by the scruff of the neck and lets him out the front door.
"Oh Mother! The pearls! Are they alright?" Lorain is almost in tears.
"Calm down honey, they're just fine. But it looks like you've lost something!!"
Lorain is confused as she stands up and looks into her mother's face. Mother is smiling down at her and holding her hand out. In the palm of her hand is something white.
It wasn't a pearl, of that she was sure.
"What is it mother?" Lorain wasn't sure what to think!

"Why my dear! It's your tooth! It was knocked out by Earl when he licked your face!"

Lorain gingerly took the tooth from her mother's hand with her two fingers and gazed at it. It was small, and it had come from her own mouth!
"May I place it under my pillow tonight mother, for the tooth fairy to come and get?"
"Yes, you may my daughter. I'm sure she will be very happy to have it," her mother answered.
Lorain happily skipped from the room, pearls bouncing from the front of her dress.
She had a tooth to place under her pillow, as well as a picture to draw of her loosing it to send to her Aunt Fan!

Just a bit of whimsy that I hope you've all enjoyed.
The "poetry" books (red ones with the marbelized pages) are NOT poetry, but actually Finance Books!!! The navy book under the amber jewelry IS a poetry book. It belonged to my uncle when he was a student.
Please come and join me for Pearls and Lace Thursday by adding your post's url in the Linky below. We can have a marvelous party ourselves although no cake and ice cream are on the menu!!
Blessings,
Doni

"Little Pitchers Have Big Ears"

As Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote in her famous books the "Little House" series,
"Little pitchers have big ears".
I've always thought of that television series fondly and have read and re-read the whole book series numerous times.
I even made a type of "stew" and called it Prarie Stew in honor of Laura.
I don't know if Ma or Pa would approve...most of it comes from a can...
But I do think that both Ma and Laura would approve of the white pitchers!!

It's not the best photo, but at least I get to show off my buffet! It's diminutive size made it perfect for the space in front of my kitchen window...
Sure wish I could change those blinds for lace...but alas, we rent!!

I'm joining up with the White Wednesday party over at Faded Charm!!
Come over and join in or just look and soak in the all the beauty of the other blogs!!

ALSO, join me tomorrow for Pearls and Lace Thursday!!!
I'll have Mr. Linky ready to post this evening.

Hello Kit-Tea!

So Where's the Kit-Tea? Just look below!

This charming print was a sweet find that now has a home with me!!
I thought it was so cute! The frame is really beautiful too.
And now for the teacups and plate...my HUSBAND found them!!!
Yes, he now has the eye, and his training is going well.
I think he deserves an A+ for this test!!

This Vintage Music is just the perfect background for a lovely tea vignette. Can you just hear the strains of a lovely piano-forte or harpsichord playing something as romantic as a piece called
'Dear Heart'? I thought the music itself was just beautiful.
Here are some close-ups that I'd love to see y'all use for some of your beautiful crafts!!!
